Ethiopia’s Ministry of Education has embarked on a crucial journey to transform its higher education system through the e-Learning for Strengthening Higher Education (e-SHE) initiative. This ambitious five-year, multi-stakeholder project aims to deliver high-quality, accessible, and scalable online learning experiences to 800,000 students and train thousands of instructors and support staff across 50 public universities.
Ethiopia faced persistent challenges in enhancing digital skills, improving access to quality learning, and strengthening education system resilience. To address these, the Ministry of Education selected the Open edX platform as the foundation for e-SHE.
In its first year, e-SHE has already engaged over 150,000 learners. The project has produced 13 courses and trained over 10,000 teachers in online instruction. The Open edX platform has enabled increased access, enhanced learning experiences, and improved teacher capacity across the nation. The establishment of multimedia centers further supports robust e-learning content creation.
e-SHE’s success is a powerful testament to the Open edX platform’s capability as a strong, scalable, and customizable solution for national-level educational transformation. It’s a clear demonstration of how technology can democratize education and build a resilient learning ecosystem.
