Asociația TechSoup România (ATSRO), a Romanian nonprofit, runs Predau Viitorul (“I Teach the Future”), an educational ecosystem delivering seasonal, instructor-led courses in AI literacy, digital citizenship, and psychopedagogy to more than 23,000 registered Romanian teachers across 85+ active courses. By late 2024, ATSRO’s platform — a heavily customized fork stuck on the outdated Open edX Lilac release, running on a single fragile AWS instance — had reached its operational limit and could no longer support peak seasonal enrollment spikes of roughly 2,500 users each spring and autumn.
ATSRO partnered with Berlin-based EdTech firm Abstract-Technology GmbH to migrate the platform onto a modern, standardized Open edX architecture using the Tutor distribution, moving sequentially from Lilac to Redwood (2025) and then to Ulmo (2026) with zero loss of teacher data or certification records. The rebuild replaced ad hoc core-code modifications with isolated plugins and micro-frontend (MFE) slots, added a custom certificate-generation plugin, a Romanian-localized interface (with an English-language Studio authoring panel), questionnaire-gated course access for donor-compliance reporting, and a modern analytics stack (ClickHouse + Superset) for real-time dashboards.
The result: a single, elastic Tutor + Kubernetes deployment that eliminates the NGO’s DevOps burden, handles seasonal traffic spikes natively, and gives ATSRO a scalable foundation for B2B partnerships hosting training on behalf of other regional nonprofits. Future plans include AI-powered instructor chatbots, personalized learning pathways, and Europass-format credentialing.
