Dr. Ellen Junn will be joining us at Open edX 2016 to deliver a keynote on the second day of the conference!
Dr. Junn has a background that spans a range of academic, administrative, and scientific success. She currently serves as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH), one of the most diverse campuses in California with over 87% students of color. As chief academic officer, she oversees 68 degrees (46 undergraduate, 22 graduate) at CSUDH, which is home to over 14,600 vibrant and diverse students (Fall 2015), over 830 faculty and 200 staff in Academic Affairs.
She has over 30 years of experience within the CSU system. Some of her recent accomplishments include implementing a number of innovations that have led to significant recognition, including: securing the Governor’s California Innovations in Higher Education Award of $3M, and significantly raising the retention and graduation of underserved student; being selected by the American Association of State Colleges and University’s (AASCU) for their Re-imagining the First Year Initiative; founding CSUDH’s Annenberg-supported Center for Innovation in STEM Education (CISE); pilot-testing MOOC courses for use among different student groups while at San Jose State University; and bringing $3.14 million in Title V Hispanic Student Institution funds to Fresno State to work on closing the under-represented student graduation rate gap.
As a cognitive scientist, Dr. Junn graduated cum laude from the University of Michigan with High Honors in Psychology and earned a Ph.D. and M.A. in Cognitive and Developmental Psychology from Princeton University. She is passionate about supporting student and faculty learning. Her topics of research and publications include early childhood education and advocacy, college teaching effectiveness, faculty development, and educational equity and diversity issues.
Dr. Junn brings in-depth knowledge on open textbooks and other materials, and the power these tools can have in modern education. She has made calls for open collaboration across education, business, industry, and government, citing its necessity for the future success of many next generation efforts.
