In the world of EdTech, the phrase open source is frequently used, but often conflated, confused, and misunderstood. Many see it simply as a way to avoid licensing fees – a “free” alternative to proprietary software. But if you view open source only through the lens of cost-savings, you’re missing the most powerful economic engine in modern education.
At this year’s Open edX Conference, Frank Nagle will challenge the status quo in his keynote: “Collaborate on the Core, Compete on the Edges: The Value and ROI of Open Source.”Frank Nagle is a Research Scientist at the Initiative on the Digital Economy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the Chief Economist at The Linux Foundation. Frank studies how competitors can collaborate on the creation of core technologies, while still competing on the products and services built on top of them – including in the context of artificial intelligence.
