Penn State Extension: Expanding Agricultural and Workforce Education with the Open edX Platform

Penn State Extension has operated on the Open edX platform for over a decade, using it to extend the university’s land-grant mission well beyond Pennsylvania. Courses spanning sustainable agriculture, pesticide applicator recertification, and green industry workforce development now reach learners in nearly every U.S. state and 27 countries. Partnerships with the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture and the Pennsylvania Landscape and Nursery Association produced training programs with direct regulatory and workforce relevance—the Spotted Lanternfly course, for example, has been adopted by multiple states. Integration with e-commerce and CRM systems supports a self-sustaining, data-informed operation that has continued to grow in scope and reach.
