Universidad Tecnológica del Uruguay (UTEC), a public university founded in 2009, built its open-access MOOC program on the Open edX platform to extend technical education across Uruguay and globally. Working with implementation partner edunext, UTEC has grown to serve more than 19,000 users through a customized environment integrated with its data warehouse and supporting AI-driven research into student retention. The platform’s intuitive design keeps support overhead low for a small team, while its open-source model aligns with UTEC’s community values—leading them to actively help peer institutions in Uruguay adopt it as well. It is a practical model for public institutions delivering free, quality technical education at scale.
