How do you take high-impact, evidence-based technical curricula and scale them to reach thousands of learners nationwide? For Clemson University’s Center for Workforce Development (CUCWD), the answer was a strategic pivot to a cloud-native architecture powered by the Open edX platform.
We are excited to share our latest case study, which explores how Clemson University transitioned from a local, server-bound installation to a professionalized, cloud-native infrastructure that now supports a diverse network of more than 20,000 learners.
The Challenge of Scaling Impact
Initially, CUCWD hosted their Open edX platform on local Clemson servers. As their initiatives grew, the team encountered a “fundamental tension” between the need to develop high-impact curricula and the limitations of their local infrastructure to distribute at scale. They needed a platform that could handle massive distribution while maintaining the reliability and data compliance required for diverse institutional settings.
The Solution: A Cloud-Native Pivot
To solve this, CUCWD migrated to a Kubernetes-based deployment on Amazon Web Services (AWS). This shift provided the team with several critical advantages:
- Scalability & Autonomy: The team gained the ability to independently spin up, manage, and white-label the Open edX platform instances for a wide array of partners.
- Data Sovereignty: By maintaining separate data structures for each instance, the team ensures strict compliance with regulations like FERPA.
- Agility: This architecture allows for the real-time deployment of customized features, enabling them to meet specific customer requirements as they arise.
Driving Real-World Outcomes
This flexible infrastructure is now powering essential workforce development initiatives:
- Choose Aerospace: In partnership with the Aviation Technician Education Council , the platform provides 1,800 high school students with content to achieve their first FAA certification, creating a direct pipeline into aviation maintenance careers.
- Technical Training: The platform hosts over 500 browser-based VR simulations for high-demand technical fields like EV maintenance, mobility, and photonics, reaching 3,000 to 4,000 students.
- State-Level Infrastructure: Through a “three-tier” system, CUCWD supports state workforce agencies in Alabama and South Carolina, providing training for major manufacturers and local Career and Technical Education centers.
Looking Ahead: Analytics and AI
CUCWD is not stopping at current successes. They are currently evolving their pedagogical approach by integrating the Aspects plugin to gain actionable insights into student engagement and identify at-risk learners. Furthermore, through the SkilRedi commercial entity, they are planning to integrate custom-trained AI models to act as “live instructors” for learners struggling with specific concepts.
As Kapil Chalil Madathil, the Wilfred P. Tiencken Endowed Professor of Industrial Engineering at Clemson University, notes: “From an architectural standpoint, we needed a platform that could truly scale. Open edX stood out… because it offered the flexibility and infrastructure needed to support a large and diverse user base.”
